What Happens When a CSCS Card Is Lost?
If a CSCS card is lost or stolen, the usual operational path is to report it and apply for a replacement through the scheme’s published process, while treating site access as blocked until a current card can be produced or verified under the principal contractor’s rules. Smart Check may still show scheme records, but many gates still want the physical card.
Quick answer
Update the worker’s matrix notes to “card reported lost — replacement in progress”, keep the known expiry visible, and do not invent a green status from a photocopy or a verbal assurance. Follow CSCS replacement steps and confirm any fees or timelines on official channels — do not treat secondary blogs as current price lists.
What to do the same day
- Record the loss date and who was notified in your evidence notes.
- Start the official replacement application route.
- Tell the site team named on near-term packages.
- Remove any local photocopies from “acceptable evidence” lists.
- Re-issue a readable card image to the matrix only when the new card arrives.
Gate reality
Principal contractors set entry rules. Some accept Smart Check plus photo ID for a short period; many do not. Your matrix should reflect availability honestly so planners do not allocate someone who will be turned away.
- Do not rely on a photocopy as a standing substitute
- Do not leave the old card image marked current after a reported loss if your process retires it
- Track replacement ETA as a note, not as a fake new expiry
