What Is CSCS Smart Check?

CSCS Smart Check is the Construction Skills Certification Scheme’s online verification service. Site teams and employers use it to confirm that a named card is recognised and current — complementary to reading the physical card, not a replacement for recording expiry in your own matrix.

Quick answer

Smart Check lets you look up a CSCS card and see whether scheme records show it as valid for the details provided. Use it at induction or spot-checks. Still keep the expiry date, card type and evidence image in your training matrix so you can plan renewals before the gate rejects someone.

What to record after a check

  • Date of verification and who performed it
  • Card number, type and occupation as shown
  • Expiry copied into the requirement field
  • Any mismatch between card face and scheme record — escalate, do not ignore

Common mistakes

Saving a Smart Check screenshot from six months ago and treating it as perpetual proof. Accepting a colleague’s verbal “he’s got CSCS” without a named row. Merging Smart Check, HSE test and card expiry into one free-text cell that nobody can filter.

Honest limits

FieldClear is not CSCS Smart Check and does not verify cards against the scheme database. It stores the dates and files you capture so renewals are visible. It does not certify competence or decide site entry. Confirm verification steps with the scheme and the principal contractor. Not legal advice.
