Can I Work with a Photocopy of a CSCS Card?
In normal UK contractor gate practice, a photocopy of a CSCS card is not accepted as proof for entry. Principal contractors want the physical card, often backed by Smart Check. Keep card images in your matrix for your own records — that is different from turning up at the gate with only a paper copy.
Quick answer
Plan on “no” for gate checks. A scanned image stored against a worker row helps audits and renewals; it does not replace the card in the person’s hand. If the card is lost, start replacement and treat site availability as blocked until the site’s written rules say otherwise.
Why photocopies fail gates
- Easy to alter or share between people
- No reliable photo match at the turnstile
- Does not prove the card was not cancelled or superseded
- Breaks the principal contractor’s badging standard
What your matrix should show
| Situation | Honest matrix status |
|---|---|
| Physical card seen and verified | Current — store expiry and image |
| Only photocopy on file | Missing or needs attention until card produced |
| Card lost, replacement pending | Needs attention — note the gap |
| Expired card, photocopy of old face | Expired — do not soften the status |
Honest limits
