How to Check If a CSCS Card Is Valid
To check whether a CSCS card is valid, compare the person in front of you with the card face, read the printed expiry, and verify the card through CSCS Smart Check or the scheme’s current online verification method. Then store the expiry and check date in your own matrix so renewals are planned before the next gate.
Quick answer
A card is operationally “current” for your records when the face expiry is still in the future, the photo and name match the worker, and scheme verification does not raise a problem. One screenshot from months ago is not a perpetual check.
Practical check sequence
- Inspect the physical card — photo, name, occupation, colour, dates.
- Confirm the person matches the photo and ID your site process requires.
- Run Smart Check (or the current CSCS verification tool) and note the date.
- Copy the expiry into the matrix requirement field.
- File a readable card image if your evidence process allows.
What “valid” does not mean
- It does not prove competence for every task on the method statement
- It does not replace IPAF, PASMA, first aid or asbestos requirements
- It does not override a principal contractor’s right to refuse entry
- It does not mean a photocopy is acceptable tomorrow
Matrix hygiene after the check
Record who checked, when, and what expiry was confirmed. If Smart Check and the card face disagree, escalate — do not quietly keep the more convenient date.
Honest limits
FieldClear is not CSCS Smart Check and does not verify cards against the scheme database. It stores the dates and files you capture. Scheme tools and rules can change — use official CSCS channels. Not legal advice; FieldClear does not certify competence or accredit you.
