How Long Does an Apprentice CSCS Card Last?

Apprentice CSCS cards are commonly published for a multi-year period tied to recognised apprenticeship pathways — often in the region of four to five years depending on the route CSCS lists at the time. The only date that belongs in your matrix is the expiry printed on the card, confirmed against current scheme guidance on cscs.uk.com.

Quick answer

Store the face expiry, note that the worker is on an apprentice pathway, and set a review before the end date so the skilled or other post-apprenticeship card is applied for in time. Do not invent a universal apprentice length in policy documents without citing the scheme.

Matrix fields that help

  • Card type: apprentice (not just “red”)
  • Occupation as printed
  • Expiry date and reminder horizon
  • Apprenticeship expected end or next review date
  • Evidence image for inductions and client packs

When the apprenticeship finishes early or late

Programme dates and card dates can diverge. If someone completes early, start the upgrade pathway rather than waiting for the printed apprentice expiry. If training overruns, check with CSCS whether the existing card still covers them — do not assume automatic extension.

  1. Diary a review 90–120 days before card expiry.
  2. Confirm qualification evidence needed for the next card.
  3. Book any required HSE test with spare retake time.
  4. Update the matrix only when the new card arrives.
