Can I Upgrade My CSCS Card Type?
You can move to a different CSCS card type when you meet the scheme’s evidence, qualification and test requirements for the new pathway — for example from trainee to skilled, or toward supervisory and managerial routes. CSCS sets the rules; your matrix should archive the old card and show only one current CSCS holding for gate planning.
Quick answer
Plan upgrades as a replacement, not a stack. Confirm the target card on cscs.uk.com, gather certificates, sit the correct HSE test if required, apply, then update the matrix when the new card arrives. Keep the old card image in history with an end date.
Typical upgrade drivers
- Completing an NVQ or apprenticeship
- Moving into supervision or management
- Leaving a provisional or trainee route
- Client or principal-contractor role expectations
Matrix steps that keep audits clean
- Add a note that an upgrade application is in progress — status stays on the current card until replaced.
- When the new card arrives, set the old CSCS row to archived/superseded.
- Enter the new colour, occupation and expiry.
- Re-run verification before the next induction.
- Check whether SMSTS/SSSTS or other courses are now required for the new role.
