How Long Does a CSCS Card Last?
Most Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) cards are issued for five years. The exact end date is printed on the card and stored in the scheme’s records — always copy that date into your matrix rather than assuming every card shares the same anniversary.
Quick answer
Treat five years as the common CSCS card life, then verify the printed expiry every time. Affiliated or partner-scheme cards can follow different rules, and some temporary or trainee routes are shorter. Your training matrix should store the face expiry, the card type and occupation, and a reminder horizon long enough for the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) test and application processing.
Where the date comes from
CSCS cards carry an issue date and an expiry date. Site gates and client portals usually care about the expiry. Scheme Smart Check and physical card checks should match the date you hold on file. If the photo, name, occupation or colour does not match the worker in front of you, fix the record before arguing about days remaining.
- Copy the expiry exactly as shown — do not round to month-end
- Record card colour or type and occupation separately from the date
- Keep a readable image or PDF of both sides where your process allows
- Note affiliated schemes (for example ECS or CISRS) under their own requirement names
Card life versus competence
A current CSCS card supports many principal-contractor gate policies. It does not by itself prove someone is competent for every task on a method statement. Keep task-specific tickets — IPAF, PASMA, asbestos awareness, first aid — as separate requirements with their own dates.
Planning renewals
- Filter the matrix for CSCS rows expiring in the next 90–120 days.
- Confirm whether an HSE test (or other scheme step) is still needed for that card pathway.
- Book tests and applications with lead time for failed bookings and site peaks.
- Update the matrix only when new evidence arrives — not when a booking is made.
- Archive the old card image against history so audits can see why the date moved.
Honest limits
FieldClear tracks assigned requirements and dates. It does not decide whether a particular site needs CSCS, interpret CSCS scheme rules, certify competence or accredit your organisation. Scheme rules change — check the card issuer for the pathway you use. This guide is operational information, not legal advice.
