How Long Does a Trainee CSCS Card Last?
Trainee CSCS cards are commonly published with a longer validity than provisional cards — often up to five years while the holder remains on a recognised training pathway. Always use the expiry on the card and confirm current trainee rules on cscs.uk.com before you set reminder windows.
Quick answer
Copy the printed trainee expiry into the matrix and treat the card as pathway-linked, not permanent skilled status. Many organisations still set intermediate review dates so training progress and card status stay aligned before the printed end date.
Trainee versus provisional
| Card | Common published pattern (verify) |
|---|---|
| Provisional | Short period — often around six months |
| Trainee | Longer period — often up to five years while training |
| Apprentice | Aligned to apprenticeship / commonly published multi-year period |
| Skilled (blue) | Often five years from issue — check the card |
What to track besides the date
- Training provider or apprenticeship status notes your process needs
- HSE test evidence if still relevant to the next application
- Planned upgrade target (skilled occupation card)
- Site acceptance of trainee cards on the packages they attend
