What Do CSCS Card Colours Mean?
CSCS card colours are a quick visual cue for the scheme pathway behind the card — trainee, labourer, skilled, supervisory, managerial and related routes. They are not a league table of competence and they do not replace task-specific tickets. Always read the occupation printed on the card and verify eligibility rules on the official CSCS site, because pathways change.
Quick answer
Treat colour as a family label for the card type, then record occupation, card number and expiry separately in your matrix. A gold or black card does not mean the holder is competent for every trade on the method statement. Site gates care about a current accepted card; your matrix must also track IPAF, first aid, asbestos awareness and other requirements beside it.
Common colour families
| Colour family | Typical pathway (verify with CSCS) |
|---|---|
| Red | Provisional, trainee, apprentice and related early routes |
| Green | Labourer / construction-related occupation routes |
| Blue | Skilled worker routes after recognised qualifications |
| Gold | Advanced craft, supervisory and related experienced routes |
| Black | Managerial routes |
| White / other | Professionally qualified and partner-scheme presentations |
This table is an operational overview for matrix owners, not an eligibility decision tree. Exact card names, qualifying evidence and test requirements sit with CSCS — check cscs.uk.com for the pathway you are applying for or verifying.
What to store on each worker row
- Card colour or type name as shown on the card
- Occupation or job title printed on the card
- Issue and expiry dates copied exactly
- A readable image of both sides where your process allows
- Date of any Smart Check or gate verification
Colour versus competence
A current CSCS card supports many principal-contractor gate policies. It does not prove someone can run a specific plant item, supervise a particular package, or work with asbestos. Keep those requirements as separate columns with their own dates.
Honest limits
FieldClear tracks the card details and dates you assign. It does not decide which CSCS colour a worker is eligible for, interpret scheme rules, certify competence or accredit your organisation. CSCS and CITB rules can change — verify with the scheme. This guide is operational information, not legal advice.
