How Early Can I Renew a CSCS Card?
Most CSCS renewals can be started before the card expires, often within a published window before the end date. Start early enough for the CITB HSE test, application processing and any qualification evidence the pathway needs — waiting until the last fortnight is how gates turn people away.

Check the current CSCS renewal rules for the card type you hold, then work backwards from the printed expiry. Leave time for an HSE test pass (where required), gathering certificates, submitting the application and receiving the new card. On busy programmes, begin 8–12 weeks out even if the formal window opens later — booking slots vanish first.
Why “early” is an operations question
Scheme windows tell you when an application will be accepted. Site programmes tell you when a named person must still be gate-ready. Your matrix should drive the second date. A card that renews “in time” for the scheme can still arrive after the worker was due on a principal-contractor site.

If the card has already expired
An expired card is a different problem from an early renewal. Many sites will refuse entry until a current card is produced. Track expired rows as expired, organise the replacement pathway, and avoid soft language that makes an expired card look “in progress” without evidence.
