Can You Hold Two CSCS Cards?

Under normal CSCS pathways, a worker holds one main CSCS card that reflects their occupation and route. Upgrades replace the previous card rather than stacking two equivalent cards. Partner-scheme cards (for example electrical or scaffolding schemes) are separate identities and should be tracked as their own requirements.

Quick answer

Do not plan a matrix around “two CSCS cards” as a routine state. When someone upgrades colour or occupation, archive the old card and record the new one as current. If they also hold an affiliated scheme card accepted on site, give that scheme its own row — do not double-count CSCS.

Upgrades and replacements

Moving from labourer to skilled, or from trainee to experienced routes, usually means a new card issue. Keep history so auditors can see the change, but only one CSCS requirement should show as current for gate purposes unless your written process says otherwise for a defined transition period.

  • Archive superseded card images with end dates
  • Update occupation and colour fields when the new card arrives
  • Re-run Smart Check after upgrade before the next induction

Partner schemes

ECS, CISRS and other recognised schemes often travel with CSCS branding at the gate but are not a second identical CSCS row. Name them correctly so filters and client packs stay honest.

Acting-up and temporary roles

A supervisor card requirement for acting-up cover is a role assignment question, not a reason to invent dual CSCS holdings. Assign the supervisory course or card your organisation requires, with its own expiry.

Honest limits

FieldClear does not interpret CSCS rules on how many cards a person may hold. It tracks assigned requirements you configure. Confirm pathway detail with the scheme. Not legal advice; not a competence certificate.
