What Is a Blue CSCS Card?
A blue CSCS card is widely recognised as the skilled worker pathway for people who have completed a relevant vocational qualification and met the scheme’s health and safety test requirements. Eligibility detail sits with CSCS — use this guide for operational tracking, not as a substitute for the official application rules.
Quick answer
On many contractor-controlled sites, a current blue skilled worker card is the expected gate card for trade operatives. Record occupation, expiry and evidence in the matrix. Still keep plant, access, first aid and other tickets as separate requirements — blue CSCS does not absorb them.
What blue usually signals
Blue typically means the holder has followed a skilled occupation route rather than labourer, trainee or managerial pathways. That helps gate teams and client auditors place the person quickly. It does not mean every activity on site is covered by that one card.
- Confirm the occupation printed on the card matches the work package
- Copy the five-year-style expiry only if that is what the card shows
- Store a card image and any Smart Check note your process requires
- Assign role-specific tickets separately from the CSCS row
Upgrades and acting up
If someone moves into supervision, they may need a different card colour or an SMSTS/SSSTS requirement in addition to CSCS. Do not paint a blue card green for supervisory gaps. Assign the supervisory course or card your organisation and client actually require.
Honest limits
FieldClear does not assess NVQ evidence or approve CSCS applications. It tracks the holdings you assign. Confirm eligibility and current fees with CSCS — published scheme rules change. This is not legal advice and does not certify competence.
