What Is a Black CSCS Card?

A black CSCS card is generally associated with managerial routes under the Construction Skills Certification Scheme. Many site managers also hold SMSTS because principal contractors ask for both. Eligibility for the black card itself is a CSCS pathway question — verify on the official scheme site before you brief applicants.

Quick answer

Use a black card row for the CSCS managerial holding, and a separate SMSTS row if your clients or role matrix require the five-day course. A current black card helps at many gates; it does not automatically satisfy every contractual supervisor or manager training clause.

Black card versus SMSTS

CSCS evidences a scheme occupation route and health and safety test pathway. SMSTS is a CITB Site Safety Plus course widely specified in contracts for people managing construction work. Sites often want both. Merging them into one matrix cell hides the first date to fail.

  • Record card colour, occupation and expiry on the CSCS requirement
  • Record SMSTS certificate date and refresher plan separately
  • Keep first aid, asbestos awareness and other H&S tickets on their own columns

Planning renewals

  1. Filter managerial roles for CSCS and SMSTS expiries together.
  2. Book refresher courses with lead time for site peaks.
  3. Update the matrix only when new evidence arrives.
  4. Archive superseded cards and certificates against history.
