Do I Need Both SMSTS and CSCS?

Many site managers need both a current CSCS card (or accepted equivalent) and a current SMSTS certificate because principal contractors and clients specify them for different reasons. CSCS is a scheme card; SMSTS is a Site Safety Plus course. One does not swallow the other in a well-built matrix.

Quick answer

If the person manages construction work on carded sites, plan for both unless the written site or role requirements clearly say otherwise. Assign two rows, two expiries, two evidence files. Do not treat a black or gold card as proof of SMSTS.

Why both appear in contracts

  • CSCS supports industry gate and occupation card policies
  • SMSTS is widely named in principal-contractor competence clauses
  • Auditors often sample both on managerial roles
  • Refresher cycles differ — SMSTS is commonly a five-year cycle with refresher rules

Statute versus contract

Neither CSCS nor SMSTS is a universal statutory licence for every construction manager in the UK. Health and safety law still expects competent management of risk. Contracts and site rules are usually what make both cards and courses mandatory for your named people.

Honest limits

FieldClear does not decide whether both are required for a role. It tracks what you assign. Confirm site rules with the principal contractor and course rules with CITB/Site Safety Plus. Not legal advice. FieldClear does not certify competence or accredit organisations.
