What Happens If SMSTS Expires While on Site?

If SMSTS expires while someone is already on site, most principal-contractor systems treat the certificate as no longer current for roles that require it. The person may be stood down from management duties, blocked from remobilisation, or asked to leave until a valid refresher or course certificate is produced — follow the site’s written rules.

Quick answer

Treat an expired SMSTS as expired on the matrix the day it ends. Do not keep a green status because “they’re mid-project”. Book the correct refresher or full course as CITB rules allow, and only restore current status when evidence is filed.

Operational response

  1. Mark the requirement expired immediately.
  2. Notify the project lead and the worker.
  3. Check whether a refresher is still permitted or a full SMSTS is required.
  4. Arrange cover for management duties if the site demands a current certificate.
  5. Update the matrix when the new certificate arrives — not when the seat is booked.

Prevention beats drama

  • Set SMSTS reminders further out than short courses
  • Filter managers on live packages first
  • Avoid stacking all refreshers in the same week as year-end peaks
  • Know the refresher window before the certificate dies

Honest limits

FieldClear does not decide whether someone may remain on site after expiry — that is the principal contractor and your employer. Confirm refresher eligibility with CITB/Site Safety Plus. Not legal advice. FieldClear does not certify competence or accredit organisations.
