How Long Before Expiry to Book an SMSTS Refresher?
Book the SMSTS refresher early enough that the new certificate is in hand before the old one expires, and early enough to remain inside any CITB-published refresher eligibility window. Many operations teams start planning 8–12 weeks out because course seats disappear first — always confirm the current refresher rules with the training provider and CITB materials.
Quick answer
Work backwards from the certificate end date: confirm you are still eligible for the refresher rather than a full SMSTS, book a seat with spare time for illness or cancellation, and keep the matrix amber until the new certificate is filed.
Why “last fortnight” fails
- Popular refresher dates sell out around regional peaks
- Failed attendance can push you past expiry mid-programme
- Some pathways stop offering the short refresher after expiry
- Client audits sample managers on live jobs first
Planning table
| Lead time | Action |
|---|---|
| 90–120 days out | Confirm expiry, eligibility and preferred venues |
| 60–90 days out | Book the refresher seat |
| After attendance | File certificate and update matrix expiry |
| If seat slips past expiry | Follow CITB rules for full course vs late refresher |
