Can I Take an SMSTS Refresher After Expiry?

Quick answer

Treat “expired = full retake” as the working rule for SMSTS. The refresher exists for people still inside the valid period (and any published grace window stated by the awarding body). Waiting until after the printed end date is how teams lose weeks of site cover and pay for a longer course.

Why the rule exists

The refresher assumes recent knowledge from a current certificate. Once that certificate has lapsed, providers and CITB-aligned pathways expect the full programme again. Do not rely on informal assurances from a booking desk that contradict the certificate dates on file.

• Assign SMSTS only to roles that need it
• Copy the certificate expiry exactly
• Set reminders 90–120 days out so the refresher can be booked while still eligible
