How Long Does First Aid at Work Last?
First Aid at Work (FAW) certificates commonly remain valid for three years from the date shown on the certificate. Always copy that printed date — and plan requalification early enough that cover is not left to one person on leave. Verify current provider and awarding-body rules for the course you use.
Quick answer
Treat three years as the common FAW life, then verify the certificate in front of you. Book requalification with lead time for course availability and site peaks. Keep FAW separate from Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) so cover reports do not overstate the depth of qualification.
What to record
- Exact course title — First Aid at Work, not a blended first aid label
- Issue and expiry dates copied from the certificate
- Provider name and certificate file
- Usual location and shift so cover can be checked
Planning requalification
- Filter FAW rows expiring in the next 90 days.
- Check whether the holder is still appointed for that workplace.
- Book the correct requalification course — not a shorter EFAW as a substitute unless your needs assessment says otherwise.
- Update the matrix only when new evidence is on file.
Cover is not a headcount
Six current FAW holders company-wide can still leave a depot uncovered if five work elsewhere and the sixth is on annual leave. Track appointments by site and shift as well as certificate dates.
Honest limits
FieldClear tracks assigned first-aid requirements and dates. It does not conduct a first-aid needs assessment, set statutory numbers or certify clinical competence. Confirm course rules with your provider. Not legal advice.
