How Long Does Emergency First Aid at Work Last?
Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) certificates normally run for three years from the issue date on the certificate. Verify that date every time, keep EFAW separate from the fuller First Aid at Work award, and check that your first-aid needs assessment still supports EFAW-level cover at that workplace.
Quick answer
Use three years as the common EFAW validity, then confirm the printed expiry. Do not merge EFAW into a single first aid – current cell with FAW holders. Mobile teams need cover assessed at the place and time of work, not only as a company total.
EFAW versus FAW
| Record | Keep distinct because |
|---|---|
| EFAW | Shorter course; different cover assumptions |
| FAW | Fuller workplace first-aid qualification |
| Mental Health First Aid | Different purpose — not a substitute |
| Appointed person notes | Appointment is separate from the certificate |
Operational checklist
- Copy issue and expiry exactly from the certificate
- Name the workplace, vehicle team or shift covered
- Store readable evidence against the worker
- Set reminders early enough for course booking
When cover changes
Leavers, transfers and shift changes can remove practical cover without changing any certificate date. Review appointed people when the rota changes, not only when a certificate nears expiry.
Honest limits
FieldClear records EFAW assignments you enter. Your needs assessment should determine suitable numbers and course levels. This is not legal or clinical advice — verify provider dates and current guidance.
