How Many First Aiders Do I Need on a Construction Site?
There is no single statutory headcount that fits every UK construction site. Suitable first-aid provision comes from a workplace first-aid needs assessment — hazards, workforce size, shift patterns, remoteness and existing medical arrangements. Track appointed people and certificate dates against that assessment; do not treat a spreadsheet total as proof of cover.
Quick answer
Decide provision from a needs assessment for that site or workplace, then name who holds FAW or EFAW on each shift. Higher-risk activities, larger numbers, night work and remote sites usually need more depth of cover — verify current HSE first-aid guidance and take competent advice for your operations. This is not legal advice.
What the matrix should show
- Named appointed first aiders per site or depot
- FAW versus EFAW clearly separated
- Certificate expiry dates with evidence
- Shift or rota notes where cover depends on attendance
Common cover failures
- Counting company-wide certificates while one site has nobody present.
- Treating EFAW as interchangeable with FAW without checking the assessment.
- Assuming a subcontractor's first aider covers your employees without agreement.
- Leaving cover to one person who then books leave.
Practical review rhythm
Review appointed cover when the workforce, shift pattern or risk profile changes — not only when a certificate expires. Update the matrix when appointments change, even if dates stay the same.
