Aircraft Type Rating vs Basic Licence Records

A basic Part-66 AML records licence categories and overall licence validity. An aircraft type rating or type-training endorsement links privileges to a specific aircraft type or group. Track them as separate dated requirements so a current AML never implies the holder is typed on tonight’s fleet.

Quick answer

Store the parent AML (number, categories, AML expiry, evidence) on one requirement. Add a separate requirement for each type rating or type-training endorsement you rely on for allocation — with the aircraft type or group named, course or endorsement dates, certificate or licence-endorsement evidence, and the Part-66 category the type sits under. Company certifying authorisation for that type is a third layer. If any layer is missing, the person is not “type ready” for planning purposes even if the AML date is still green.

Three layers planners actually need

Basic licence currency answers whether the person still holds a Part-66 framework licence. Type currency answers whether privileges extend to the aircraft on the work order. Company authorisation answers whether your approved organisation has granted that person release or support privileges within its exposition. Audits and shift briefs fail when those three answers share one spreadsheet cell labelled “OK”.

  • Name the aircraft type or group on the type row — never “type current” alone
  • Record difference training separately from a full type course when your process treats them differently
  • Link practical consolidation or OJT dates your quality system requires without overwriting the course certificate date
  • Keep variant assumptions honest — related types are not automatically interchangeable

Recording type endorsements without clutter

  1. List the fleet types your hangar and line actually release or support.
  2. For each person, create type rows only for types they hold — blank is clearer than a false green.
  3. Attach the endorsement page or type-course certificate to that row.
  4. Set reminders from the earliest relevant date (endorsement, company review, or continuation policy).
  5. Before roster publication, filter by type required on the work orders for that window.

Where basic-licence-only tracking breaks

A filter on AML expiry can show a full team of current licence holders while only one person holds the type on the overnight line schedule. Excel makes that worse when “type – current” is a comment on the AML row: sorting by date cannot answer coverage by aircraft. Outstation and contractor cover amplify the risk because evidence arrives as PDFs in email threads that never reach the shared sheet.

CAA sources and trackers

Use CAA Part-66 general guidance for licence-framework context, and the CAA Part-66 renewal page when the parent AML date is the clock you are chasing. For operational expiry views, use aircraft type rating expiry beside UK Part-66 AML expiry and Part-145 certifying authorisation expiry. The certificate expiry tracker helps when type rows sit among other dated holdings.

Honest limits

FieldClear tracks type-rating and type-training records you enter. It does not grant type privileges, decide difference-training equivalences, certify airworthiness, or replace Part-145 authorisation. Verify endorsements with the CAA or your approved records where required. This guide is not legal or aviation regulatory advice.
