Who Needs SSSTS?
SSSTS (Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme) is commonly specified for first-line supervisors who direct operatives on construction sites. Like SMSTS, it is usually driven by principal-contractor and client requirements rather than a single statute that names SSSTS for every supervisor in the country.
Quick answer
Assign SSSTS to supervisor roles where your site rules or contracts require it. Do not assume SMSTS holders automatically cover SSSTS duties — they are different courses. Track SSSTS expiry on its own row.
Typical assignees
- Gang supervisors and trade supervisors named on packages
- Working supervisors who direct others day to day
- Agency supervisors supplied into PC-controlled sites that demand SSSTS
- Not every skilled operative — unless they also supervise
SSSTS and SMSTS on the same person
Some people hold both as they move between supervising and managing. Keep both dates. If someone only holds SMSTS, check whether the site still asks for SSSTS for the supervisor role they are filling — contracts vary.
- Read the induction and prequalification clauses for supervisor training.
- Map SSSTS to supervisor roles in your requirement set.
- Set refresher reminders with enough booking lead time.
- Update status only when certificates are on file.
