How Long Does SSSTS Last?
SSSTS is commonly planned on a roughly five-year cycle from award, but supervisors should treat the printed certificate and current scheme rules—including refresher eligibility—as authoritative. Do not assume every supervisor pathway matches a manager’s SMSTS arrangements.
SSSTS sits in a different operational role
SSSTS supports people supervising work on site day to day. Expiry risk shows up differently from SMSTS: gangs can have several supervisors rotating across shifts, night works and short-notice agency cover. A matrix that only watches managers will miss a supervisor whose certificate lapses mid-pour. Confirm validity from the certificate and scheme guidance in force for that award; do not copy a manager’s renewal date onto supervisor rows because “they did the course together”.
Supervisor-focused record checklist
- Requirement labelled SSSTS (or SSSTS refresher)—never merged with SMSTS
- Award date and any printed validity or expiry statement
- Employer company when the person is agency or labour-only subcontract
- Usual shift or gang so cover gaps are visible
- Evidence file readable enough for gate or client checks
- Refresher window used for planning, sourced from scheme or company policy—not guessed
- Deputy or cover supervisor identified where a single holder is a single point of failure
Workflow before a supervisory gap appears
Plan renewals against the shift pattern and the projects that still need that supervisor, not only against a calendar anniversary.
- List supervisors and acting supervisors who carry an assigned SSSTS requirement.
- Import dates from certificates; flag missing evidence immediately.
- Filter SSSTS due within 90 days alongside live and upcoming programmes.
- Confirm whether a refresher is still available before booking a full course.
- Agree cover if the only current supervisor on a gang cannot renew in time.
- Update the matrix on receipt of new evidence and re-check cover for the full works window.
Failure modes unique to supervisory cover
Promotions create silent gaps: an operative becomes acting supervisor without an SSSTS assignment ever being added. Conversely, someone who completed SSSTS years ago may still show green while never supervising—wasting renewal budget. Keep role assignments current. In-company or closed-course certificates should still be stored as named evidence with the same fields; the delivery format does not remove expiry planning. When a principal contractor asks for “supervisor tickets”, supply named SSSTS extracts rather than a company claim.
Agency substitutions are the usual surprise. A named supervisor is replaced overnight with someone holding a different card mix or an expired SSSTS. Require labour suppliers to send named-person evidence before the shift, and reject pack claims that the whole agency bench is current. Keep SMSTS and SSSTS as separate filters so a manager’s green cell cannot hide a supervisory hole on the same project.
Limits of tracking
FieldClear tracks assigned SSSTS requirements and dates only. It does not confirm scheme acceptance, refresher eligibility or site authorisation. Typical validity assumptions are not guarantees. This guide is not legal advice.
