Is SSSTS a Legal Requirement?
SSSTS is not generally a statutory requirement named for every site supervisor in UK law. It is frequently demanded through contracts, framework rules and principal-contractor induction standards. Record it where those arrangements apply — and keep the distinction clear when you brief teams.
Quick answer
Expect SSSTS on many contractor-controlled sites for supervisory roles because buyers ask for it, not because a single Act says every supervisor must hold that branded certificate. Your matrix should follow your organisation’s assignment rules and the sites you work on.
Why the distinction matters
If you tell people “SSSTS is the law”, you invite two failures: roles that never needed it get cluttered, and roles that truly need it get no explanation when a client changes the rule. Contractual clarity beats slogans.
| Driver | What to record |
|---|---|
| Principal contractor gate policy | SSSTS assigned to named supervisor roles on that site |
| Framework tender | Evidence for the people named in the bid |
| Internal development path | Optional or staged assignment — label it honestly |
| Domestic-only work | May be not required — do not fake green |
Acting-up supervisors
Short-notice acting-up is where missing SSSTS appears. Either assign the requirement and track it, or document an approved cover arrangement. Silence in the matrix is not a control.
Honest limits
FieldClear does not interpret whether SSSTS is legally mandatory. It organises assigned requirements and dates. Not legal advice; FieldClear does not certify competence or provide accreditation.
