What Is a Worker Type Column on a Training Matrix?

Worker type is a simple classification on each row — typically payroll, agency, labour-only subcontract, or trade subcontract — so you can filter, assign ownership and apply the right evidence rules without mixing populations in one blur.

Quick answer

Add a controlled dropdown (not free text) for engagement type. Use it to filter Monday packs, sample subcontract evidence, and see who should supply certificates. It is not a substitute for employer name or role.

Typical values

Typical values
Worker typeWhy tag it
Payroll / PAYEYour renewal ownership is usually clearer
AgencyEvidence often arrives late; substitutions common
Labour-only subcontractNamed people, thin admin — verify hard
Trade subcontractPackage employer may hold originals
Apprentice / traineeDifferent card pathways and supervision

How to use it operationally

  • Filter agency rows before peak labour weeks
  • Sample subcontract evidence separately for client audits
  • Combine with employer column — type alone is not enough
  • Keep the list short; too many categories and nobody maintains them
  1. Agree the allowed types with H&S and commercial.
  2. Backfill existing rows in one cleanup pass.
  3. Make the field mandatory on new starters.
  4. Review mis-tags when someone moves from agency to payroll.

Honest limits

FieldClear can store worker and employer attributes you define. Worker type does not determine legal employment status by itself. Not legal or employment advice.
