How Long Does an IPAF Card Last?

An IPAF Powered Access Licence (PAL) card commonly lasts five years from the training date shown on the card. Always copy the printed expiry and the machine categories — a current card for the wrong category is not cover for the equipment on site.

Quick answer

Plan on five years for a standard IPAF PAL card, verify the face date, and store categories (for example 3a, 3b, 1b) as structured data. Renew before the card expires; do not rely on verbal claims that someone “did IPAF years ago”.

Categories matter as much as dates

Access equipment varies. Your matrix should show which categories were trained, not a single green IPAF tick. When plant on site changes, re-check the category list against the method statement.

  • Record card number, expiry and categories
  • Attach a readable card image
  • Set reminders with lead time for course availability
  • Separate harness or rescue training if your process assigns it

Renewal practice

  1. Filter IPAF rows due in the next 90 days.
  2. Confirm categories still match the work the person will do.
  3. Book renewal training before the card lapses.
  4. Update the matrix when the new card arrives.

Honest limits

FieldClear tracks assigned IPAF dates and evidence. It does not deliver IPAF training, decide who needs which category or certify competence. Confirm scheme rules with the training provider. Not legal advice.
