Do I Need a CSCS Card to Work on Site?

A CSCS card is not generally required by a single nationwide statute for every construction site. In practice, many principal contractors and clients enforce cards under site rules aligned with industry initiatives such as Build UK’s preference for carded workers — so “do I need one?” is usually answered by the site you are entering, not by a blanket Act.

Quick answer

Expect CSCS (or an accepted affiliated card) on most medium and large contractor-controlled sites because gate policy demands it. Smaller domestic jobs and some specialist environments may not. Your organisation should assign CSCS where your clients and principal-contractor arrangements require it, then track expiry — not invent a universal legal duty that does not exist in that form.

Statute versus site rules

Health and safety law expects employers to ensure people are competent for the work. That duty is broader than holding one branded card. CSCS is a widely recognised way many contractors evidence basic construction health and safety training and occupation routes for gate control. Confusing “industry gate policy” with “criminal offence not to hold CSCS” leads to sloppy matrix design and weak briefings.

  • Check the principal contractor’s induction and badging rules for each site
  • Record which affiliated cards the site accepts
  • Assign CSCS only to roles and packages that need it — avoid false greens on roles that never visit carded sites
  • Keep task tickets separate from the card requirement

What to put in the matrix

  1. Name the requirement clearly (CSCS or the accepted scheme).
  2. Attach card type, occupation and expiry.
  3. Store evidence for Smart Check or induction packs.
  4. Review assignments when a worker moves from domestic to PC-controlled work.

Honest limits

FieldClear does not decide whether a site must demand CSCS. It tracks the requirements you assign. Product pages help organise evidence; they do not accredit you or certify competence. This is operational guidance, not legal advice — confirm site rules with the principal contractor or client.
