CSCS vs CPCS: What Is the Difference?
CSCS and CPCS solve different problems. CSCS is the Construction Skills Certification Scheme card many sites require for general site access and occupation routes. CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) cards evidence plant categories. Holding one does not replace the other when both are required.
Quick answer
Track CSCS for gate and occupation requirements, and CPCS for the plant categories someone operates. A digger driver who only has CSCS is not evidenced for plant; a plant card alone may still fail a CSCS-gated induction.
Side-by-side
| Scheme | What it mainly evidences |
|---|---|
| CSCS | Occupation pathway / construction H&S card culture for many sites |
| CPCS | Plant category competence cards |
| NPORS / other plant | Alternative plant schemes some sites accept |
| Task tickets | Access, lifting support roles, first aid — still separate |
Matrix design
- One CSCS requirement with colour, occupation and expiry
- CPCS (or accepted plant scheme) requirements per category you care about
- No fake “plant covered by blue CSCS” shortcuts
- Reminders set to the earliest critical date for mobilisation
Honest limits
FieldClear does not decide whether a site accepts CPCS, NPORS or another plant card. Confirm scheme rules with the issuers and site rules with the principal contractor. Not legal advice. FieldClear does not certify competence or accredit you.
