What Should a Construction Training Matrix Include?

Strong disclaimer: everything below is an example set of fields, not a mandatory or legal requirements list. CSCS, IPAF, PASMA, first aid and similar credentials are not universally required for every person on every site. Requirements vary by role, activity, customer and site. Your competent person and contracts decide what you assign.

Identity and employment fields

• Full name
• Job / trade role as you use it internally
• Employed / subcontractor / agency
• Company name (for subcontractors)
• Optional: primary site or crew

Requirement columns (examples only)

Pick columns that match what you actually assign. Delete columns you do not use. Adding every industry acronym “just in case” creates noise and false missing data.

Cell contents

• Expiry date as a real date where the credential expires
• Completion date for one-off inductions if that is your rule
• N/A or Not required when the column does not apply
• Blank only when the record is missing

Evidence and metadata

• Link or attachment reference per critical credential
• Last reviewed date (optional)
• Record owner / who chases renewals (optional)

What not to stuff into the same grid

Soft skill ratings belong in a skills matrix, not mixed into expiry cells. Long narrative notes belong in a comments field or HR file — not as a substitute for dates.

Start from a template, then delete

A construction training matrix template is a starting point. Strip columns that are not assigned requirements for your work. The best matrix is the shortest one that still answers who meets assigned requirements before site.
