Temporary Works Awareness vs Coordinator

Temporary works awareness briefing or training is for people who need to recognise temporary works and their controls. Temporary works coordinator (TWC) training is for those appointed under your temporary works procedure to coordinate design and implementation. They are not interchangeable — track them as separate requirements.

Quick answer

Give awareness to roles that interact with temporary works on site. Appoint and train coordinators (and supervisors where your procedure requires) with the specific TWC or TWS pathway you use. A green awareness cell does not prove a coordinator is in place.

Why the split matters

BS 5975–aligned procedures distinguish appointments from general site awareness. Audits and principal contractors often ask who the coordinator is by name. If your matrix only shows “TW trained”, you cannot answer.

What to record

  • Exact course or briefing title
  • Appointment status separate from training date where relevant
  • Evidence files for sample checks
  • Cover when the named coordinator is on leave
  1. List temporary works appointments for each project.
  2. Assign training requirements that match those appointments.
  3. Track expiry or refresh if your provider or procedure sets one.
  4. Keep awareness training from cluttering coordinator filters.

Honest limits

FieldClear does not appoint temporary works coordinators or approve designs. It tracks the training and appointments you record. This is operational guidance, not legal or engineering advice, and does not certify competence.
