Is a Training Matrix Required for CHAS?

CHAS does not typically mandate a specific “training matrix” spreadsheet format. Assessors care that you can show organised, named training evidence for the people and activities you claim — dates, statuses and readable files that match your answers.

Quick answer

No honest vendor can say “CHAS requires a training matrix” as a fixed rule. What CHAS-style assessments usually test is whether your process identifies who needs which training and whether you can produce current evidence on request. A matrix is a common way to organise that; it is not accreditation itself.

What assessors usually look for

  • Named workers tied to roles or activities in your submission
  • Assigned requirements that match the work you describe
  • Issue and expiry dates where the evidence shows them
  • Readable certificate or card files, not cropped corners
  • Honest gaps and “not required” statuses rather than empty cells

Why teams still use a matrix

A living grid makes sample packs faster and keeps expiries honest between renewals. That is evidence organisation — useful for CHAS, SafeContractor and other SSIP members — not a guarantee of approval.

Why teams still use a matrix
Helpful for assessmentNot what CHAS “requires”
Controlled extract with names and datesA branded software screenshot alone
Files linked to each personA blank template with no workers
Subcontractor rows in the same discipline“All operatives trained” without names

FieldClear’s role

FieldClear helps you import a matrix, attach evidence and export a dated pack. It is not CHAS, does not accredit your organisation, and CHAS does not require FieldClear. Scheme criteria change — check your current questionnaire.
