How Often Should Face-Fit Testing Be Repeated?

Many UK employers repeat face-fit testing about annually, and sooner when something that affects the seal changes — face shape, dental work, significant weight change, a different tight-fitting respirator, or a failed seal check. Frame the interval as employer policy aligned with HSE RPE guidance, then verify your written arrangements; do not treat a blog timeline as statute.

Quick answer

Set a clear organisational review interval (commonly yearly) and list event-based retest triggers. Record both on the worker's face-fit row. Retest after mask model changes even if the diary date has not arrived.

Typical retest triggers

  • Scheduled policy interval (often annual — confirm yours)
  • Change of tight-fitting mask make, model or size
  • Facial changes that may affect the seal
  • Concerns from seal checks or wearer reports
  • Return to RPE use after a long gap, where policy requires it

How to run reminders

  1. Enter the last test date and the next review date.
  2. Keep mask identity in filterable fields, not buried notes.
  3. Flag workers whose stores issue a different model.
  4. Update status only when a new pass is on file.

Honest limits

FieldClear tracks the review dates you assign. It does not prescribe a statutory retest period or guarantee fit. Check current HSE guidance and your competent advice. Not legal advice.
