How Long Does a Face-Fit Test Last?

A face-fit test does not have one universal UK expiry date printed by law for every workplace. Employers commonly retest on an annual cycle or sooner when face shape, respirator model or organisational policy changes — always record the mask make, model and size with the test date, and verify your arrangements against current HSE guidance on RPE.

Quick answer

Store the test date, the next review you have set, and the exact respirator the person passed on. A pass is not transferable to every mask in the stores. Facial hair, dental work, weight change or a new model can trigger retesting before the diary date.

What a useful record includes

  • Mask make, model and size
  • Test method and result
  • Test and review dates
  • Tester identity and evidence
  • Any retest trigger noted

Common matrix mistakes

  1. One face fit current cell with no mask identity.
  2. Treating face-fit as general RPE awareness training.
  3. Leaving records green after procurement switches brand.
  4. Ignoring facial-hair policies that prevent an effective seal.

Honest limits

FieldClear stores assigned face-fit records. It does not select RPE, assess exposure or guarantee a seal at the point of use. Confirm employer and HSE-aligned practice. Not legal advice.
