How Long Does the CITB HSE Test Last?

For most CSCS application and renewal pathways, a CITB Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) test pass is commonly expected to be no more than two years old. Record the test date as its own requirement — a current card does not prove the test is still inside the window your next application needs.

Quick answer

Plan on a two-year working life for the touch-screen HSE test when it is used for card applications, then confirm the current CITB/CSCS rule for the pathway you are on. Put the pass date in the matrix with evidence. Do not bury it inside a CSCS notes field.

Why the test and card diverge

Cards often last five years. Tests are shorter-lived for application purposes. Mid-card, someone can look “fine” at the gate while being unable to renew without sitting the test again. Separate rows make that visible months ahead.

  1. Capture test pass date from the result evidence.
  2. Set a reminder before the two-year mark if renewal is likely.
  3. Book retakes before peak summer or framework call-offs.
  4. Update CSCS only when the new card evidence arrives.

Exemptions and other routes

Some card routes or professional memberships interact differently with the test requirement. Your organisation should follow the pathway rules that apply, not a single house rule invented for convenience. When in doubt, check the scheme guidance for that card type.

  • Name the requirement “CITB HSE test” (or equivalent)
  • Store result PDF or confirmation
  • Link related CSCS card as a separate assigned requirement

Honest limits

FieldClear does not sit tests, interpret CITB rules or decide who must take which revision of the test. It tracks dates you assign. Not legal advice; not accreditation.
