Can I Take an SSSTS Refresher After Expiry?
No. Once a Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) certificate has expired, you generally cannot take the one-day refresher — you must complete the full SSSTS course again. Keep supervisor expiries on the matrix with enough lead time that the refresher remains available.
Quick answer
If the SSSTS certificate date has passed, plan a full course. The refresher is for people who renew while still current (subject to the awarding body’s published window). Treating an expired supervisor as “booked on refresher next month” creates false cover on site.
SSSTS versus SMSTS
The same renewal logic applies at both levels: refreshers are for current certificates; lapsed certificates need the full programme. SSSTS failures often show up first because acting-up cover and short-notice supervisor swaps hide behind informal arrangements.
- Name SSSTS as its own requirement — do not merge with SMSTS
- Track acting-up supervisors the same way as permanent ones
- Set reminders matched to booking lead times in your region
- Keep certificate files readable for client sample checks
What to do when it has already lapsed
- Mark the row expired — do not soften the status.
- Book the full SSSTS course with a provider.
- Decide temporary cover from people with current certificates.
- Update expiry and evidence only when the new certificate is issued.
- Review why the reminder failed so the next supervisor does not repeat it.
Buyer checklist
| Question | Healthy answer |
|---|---|
| Who owns SSSTS renewals? | Named coordinator, not “whoever books training” |
| How far ahead are reminders? | Enough for a refresher while still eligible |
| Is acting-up visible? | Yes — temporary supervisors appear on the matrix |
| Is a booking treated as cover? | No — only a current certificate |
