Quick answer
A piling training matrix lists rig operators, attendants and labourers against plant categories, slinger tickets and any confined-space or site-access records their roles need — with expiry dates. Download this free Excel template and record the rig type, not a generic plant cell. FieldClear can import later. It does not authorise piling operations.
What’s in the template
An Excel matrix for piling contractors whose crews change with rig type, city-centre access and night works. A “CPCS current” cell hides whether the category matches the rig on the plot.
- Worker rows with name, role and worker type — so rig operators, attendants and piling labourers sit on the same sheet.
- Conditional formatting for expired, expiring and current dates.
- A distinction between blank (no record held) and N/A (not required).
- An evidence location column for certificates and card images.
- A role requirements sheet you can match to the grades you actually employ.
Example columns for piling crews
| Example column | Typical use | Watch-out |
|---|---|---|
| Rig / plant category | Operator allocation | CFA, rotary and driven are not one ticket |
| Slinger / signaller | Cage and tool handling | Often a different person from the operator |
| CSCS / site access | Principal-contractor gates | Card type still matters |
| Confined space (if assigned) | Pits, shafts, existing basements | Class of course matters |
| First aid | If assigned to the gang | Night shifts need cover planning |
How to use it
- Add operators, attendants and labourers — including subcontract rigs.
- Name the plant category the person is actually ticketed for.
- Enter expiry dates as DD/MM/YYYY.
- Use N/A when a column does not apply; leave blank only when missing.
- Review before each plot and night-work window.
- When client packs start from screenshots, upload for a live matrix.
Disclaimer
Example columns are not a mandatory list. Rig type, temporary works and site rules vary by method. This is not legal or geotechnical advice. A green cell is not authorisation to bore, drive or lift cages.
Questions people ask before signing up
Is the training matrix template really free?
Yes. Download the Excel file and use it however you like, including commercially. There is no obligation to try the software.
What is a training matrix?
A training matrix is a grid of workers against the training, qualifications and cards their roles require. Each cell shows whether that person holds that requirement and when it expires. It is the quickest way to see where the gaps are across a workforce.
Can I import my existing Excel training matrix?
Yes. Upload an Excel or CSV file, map the columns to workers, roles, qualifications and expiry dates, then preview the result. Nothing is created until you confirm the import.
Does the software tell me which qualifications are legally required?
No. The system helps you track the requirements your organisation assigns. You remain responsible for determining what applies to your workers and activities. We do not provide legal or health and safety advice.
Can I track subcontractors?
Yes. Workers can be recorded as employees, subcontractors, agency workers or other worker types, and you can filter the matrix by type.
Can I store certificates?
Yes. Attach supporting evidence such as PDFs and images to worker records, so the certificate sits alongside the expiry date rather than in a separate folder.
Outgrown your spreadsheet?
Upload the same file and turn it into a live matrix with automatic expiry reminders.
