What’s in the template
A workers-against-requirements Excel matrix with automatic colour from today’s date, framed for scaffolding firms that juggle CISRS progression, scaffold inspection tickets and client site cards across mixed gangs.
- Worker rows with role and worker type (employee, subcontractor, agency).
- Conditional formatting for expired, expiring and current dates.
- Blank vs N/A so “not required for this grade” is not mistaken for missing.
- Evidence location so card photos sit with the date.
- A role requirements sheet for trainee, scaffolder and inspector grades.
Example columns to rename for scaffolding
Delete anything you do not assign. Examples only — not a mandatory list:
| Example column | Typical use | Watch-out |
|---|---|---|
| CISRS stage / card type | Progression through scaffolder grades | Do not store only “CISRS — yes” |
| Scaffold inspection ticket | Who can inspect which complexity | Scope matters as much as the date |
| CSCS / site access | If sites require a card | Customer and site dependent |
| Working at height / harness | If your organisation assigns them | Keep separate from CISRS |
| First aid | If assigned to the gang | Role and site dependent |
How to use it for scaffolding crews
- Add scaffolders, labourers and inspectors — including subcontractors who attend your sites.
- Split CISRS and inspection into separate columns if different people hold them.
- Enter expiry dates as DD/MM/YYYY.
- Mark N/A for grades that do not need a column; leave blank only when the record is missing.
- Review before mobilising a gang — Excel will not email you.
- When colouring cells becomes the weekly job, run the matrix health check or upload for reminders.
Disclaimer
CISRS stages, inspection tickets and site cards appear as examples only. Requirements vary by contract, structure and client. This is not legal or scheme advice. A green cell is not authorisation to erect or inspect any particular scaffold.
Questions people ask before signing up
Is the training matrix template really free?
Yes. Download the Excel file and use it however you like, including commercially. There is no obligation to try the software.
What is a training matrix?
A training matrix is a grid of workers against the training, qualifications and cards their roles require. Each cell shows whether that person holds that requirement and when it expires. It is the quickest way to see where the gaps are across a workforce.
Can I import my existing Excel training matrix?
Yes. Upload an Excel or CSV file, map the columns to workers, roles, qualifications and expiry dates, then preview the result. Nothing is created until you confirm the import.
Does the software tell me which qualifications are legally required?
No. The system helps you track the requirements your organisation assigns. You remain responsible for determining what applies to your workers and activities. We do not provide legal or health and safety advice.
Can I track subcontractors?
Yes. Workers can be recorded as employees, subcontractors, agency workers or other worker types, and you can filter the matrix by type.
Can I store certificates?
Yes. Attach supporting evidence such as PDFs and images to worker records, so the certificate sits alongside the expiry date rather than in a separate folder.
