Who Needs Banksman or Slinger Training?
People who direct vehicle movements or signal lifting operations typically need training matched to that duty. Vehicle banksman and slinger-signaller courses are not automatically interchangeable — assign the scope your risk assessment and lift or traffic plan require, then track the exact course on the matrix.
Quick answer
If someone marshals vehicles or acts as a slinger-signaller for lifting, they need suitable training for that activity and environment. Do not rely on a generic banksman cell. Verify scheme or provider scope and site rules; this is not legal advice.
Split the duties
- Vehicle / plant banksman for reversing and traffic interfaces
- Slinger-signaller for lifting signals and load attachment roles taught
- Appointed person and crane supervisor as separate lifting roles
- Traffic marshal where the site uses that titled role
Who usually appears in scope
- Workers named on traffic or vehicle management plans.
- People signalling crane or plant lifts under a lift plan.
- Agency labour sent as banksman — check actual course scope on arrival.
- Anyone whose method statement depends on a trained marshaller.
