Steel Erection Training Records Guide

Steel erection teams need dated records for site cards, working at height, lifting and signalling roles, and any appointed-person or supervisor qualifications your method assigns — kept per named worker, not as a gang assumption. The matrix organises evidence; it does not prove every lift is safe.

Quick answer

Give each erector and supervisor their own rows, separate height and lifting requirements from general CSCS, attach card faces, and filter expiries before each critical lift window. Keep banksman/slinger and appointed-person qualifications explicit for the people actually appointed that day.

Records teams commonly assign

  • Relevant CSCS or affiliated card for the occupation
  • Working at height / harness training where assigned
  • Slinger-signaller or banksman qualifications for lift-team roles
  • Appointed person / lifting operations training where appointed
  • MEWP or access tickets for the equipment in use
  • Site and client inductions for the live project
  • First-aid cover for the shift pattern on site

Daily-to-weekly control habit

  1. Confirm the named lift team against the matrix before the lift study is closed.
  2. Check tickets for the plant and access methods actually planned.
  3. Escalate replacements when a key ticket expires mid-programme.
  4. Store evidence used for client or principal-contractor checks with the date.

Avoid gang-level green status

A single “steel gang OK” cell hides who holds the appointed-person ticket and who is only trained as a slinger. When someone is substituted from the yard, re-check their rows. Clients increasingly ask for named evidence on high-risk packages.
