IOSH Managing Safely vs SMSTS: Keep Records Separate

IOSH Managing Safely and SMSTS are different courses serving different common use cases. Record them as separate assigned requirements. Neither is universally required for every manager, and IOSH certificates often carry no fixed scheme expiry—your employer may still set a review date.

Do not treat the labels as interchangeable

SMSTS is a CITB site management safety course widely requested on UK construction projects. IOSH Managing Safely is a broader managing-safely product used across many sectors, including some construction employers. A client asking for SMSTS will not necessarily accept Managing Safely as a substitute, and the reverse can also be true. Assign whichever your organisation and project arrangements require—possibly both for some people—without merging them into one “managers’ ticket” column.

Record checklist when both may appear

  • Distinct requirement names for IOSH Managing Safely and SMSTS
  • Award dates and certificate evidence on each line
  • SMSTS validity or expiry taken from certificate and scheme rules
  • IOSH review or refresher date from company policy where no printed expiry exists
  • Role context: site manager pathway versus wider line-management pathway
  • Not-required markers where a role assigns neither
  • Booking notes kept separate from current credential status

Tracking workflow without false equivalence

Run filters independently. A current IOSH date must not hide an expired SMSTS when the project asks for SMSTS.

  1. Map which roles assign IOSH Managing Safely, SMSTS, both, or neither.
  2. Import evidence and dates; for IOSH without printed expiry, enter the review date your policy sets.
  3. Filter each requirement’s due or review window against live projects.
  4. Book the correct product—do not auto-substitute courses to fill a diary gap.
  5. Update only the matching requirement when new evidence arrives.
  6. Brief commercial teams so tender text does not claim “all managers SMSTS/IOSH” without named proof.

Expiry and review differences in practice

SMSTS planning usually follows a familiar multi-year cycle and refresher pathway—always confirm the certificate and current scheme rules. IOSH Managing Safely often has no universal card-style expiry; certificates can sit quietly until someone notices the holder changed department or risk profile. Employers who still want periodic refreshers should record an internal review date so the matrix surfaces action, without pretending the scheme printed that date. SSSTS remains a third line for supervisors; do not fold it into either manager product.

Accreditation narratives sometimes mention management training generically. Keep sample evidence labelled with the real course titles assessors will read. When someone holds both, show both—hiding one to “simplify” the grid creates surprise at audit when the client’s preference becomes clear.
