Does ISO 45001 Require a Training Matrix?
ISO 45001 requires organisations to determine competence needs, ensure people are competent, and retain appropriate documented information. It does not typically prescribe a “training matrix” file format. Many UK contractors use a matrix because it makes audits and day-to-day checks practical.
Quick answer
No — the standard focuses on competence outcomes and suitable records, not on forcing one grid layout. If your documented information shows who needs what, how you verify it, and how you keep it current, auditors can work with several formats.
What competence evidence usually looks like
- Role or activity requirements defined by the organisation
- Training, qualifications or experience records for individuals
- Dates and refresher arrangements where relevant
- Evidence that gaps are identified and closed
Why a matrix still helps
Auditors sample. A maintained matrix with linked certificates shortens that sampling. It also supports operational questions — who is current for Monday’s mobilisation — which spreadsheets often fail once the workforce grows.
Honest limits
FieldClear tracks assigned requirements and evidence. It does not certify ISO 45001, act as a certification body, or decide legal duties. Certification decisions sit with your chosen certification body. Not legal advice.
