Can Training Matrix Software Replace an LMS?
Usually no. Training matrix software and a learning management system (LMS) do different jobs. The matrix answers who is current against assigned requirements; an LMS delivers e-learning, assessments and course completions.
Quick answer
Do not expect matrix software to replace an LMS if you need to host courses, mark quizzes or push mandatory e-learning. Do not buy a full LMS if your real pain is Excel expiries and certificate packs.
Job comparison
| Need | Matrix software | LMS |
|---|---|---|
| Track cards and expiries | Yes — core job | Sometimes secondary |
| Attach certificate images | Yes | Varies |
| Deliver e-learning modules | No (FieldClear does not) | Yes — core job |
| Export audit samples for sites | Yes — common strength | Possible but not the main design |
When you might use both
Larger organisations sometimes complete courses in an LMS, then record the resulting qualification and expiry on the operational matrix used by site teams. Keep one source of truth for “are they current for Monday?”
Honest limits
FieldClear is training matrix and certificate expiry software — not an LMS. It does not deliver courses. Not legal advice.
