Quick answer
A waste management training matrix lists workers against the plant tickets, driving qualifications and site inductions their roles need — with expiry dates you can colour from today. Download this free Excel template, rename the columns, and keep blank vs N/A clear. Upload later if you want reminders. FieldClear does not decide which waste licences or carriage rules apply to you.
What’s in the template
An Excel training matrix aimed at waste contractors and MRF / transfer teams who rotate plant operators, HGV drivers and yard operatives across shifts.
- Worker rows with role and worker type.
- Conditional formatting driven by today’s date.
- Blank vs N/A so plant categories not held are not confused with missing records.
- Evidence location for card photos and certificates.
- A role requirements sheet for operative, driver and supervisor grades.
Example columns to rename for waste sites
Delete anything you do not assign. Examples only:
| Example column | Typical use | Reminder |
|---|---|---|
| Plant category (e.g. loading shovel) | If you allocate by machine | Do not merge into one “plant” tick |
| HGV / driver CPC | If drivers are in the same matrix | Keep separate from plant tickets |
| ADR / dangerous goods (if assigned) | Load-specific carriage training | Only where your contracts require it |
| Site / depot induction | Yard and customer sites | Often renews more often than cards |
| First aid / fire marshal | If assigned on shift | Role-dependent |
How to use it for waste teams
- List operatives, drivers and supervisors who work your depots and customer sites.
- Split plant and driving into separate columns if you allocate work that way.
- Enter expiry dates as DD/MM/YYYY.
- Use N/A when a column does not apply; leave blank only when missing.
- Review before covering night shifts or new customer sites.
- When the sheet drifts, run the matrix health check or upload for reminders.
Disclaimer
Plant, driving and carriage columns are examples only. Requirements vary by waste stream, vehicle and site. This is not legal or environmental permitting advice. A green cell is not authorisation to drive or operate plant.
Questions people ask before signing up
Is the training matrix template really free?
Yes. Download the Excel file and use it however you like, including commercially. There is no obligation to try the software.
What is a training matrix?
A training matrix is a grid of workers against the training, qualifications and cards their roles require. Each cell shows whether that person holds that requirement and when it expires. It is the quickest way to see where the gaps are across a workforce.
Can I import my existing Excel training matrix?
Yes. Upload an Excel or CSV file, map the columns to workers, roles, qualifications and expiry dates, then preview the result. Nothing is created until you confirm the import.
Does the software tell me which qualifications are legally required?
No. The system helps you track the requirements your organisation assigns. You remain responsible for determining what applies to your workers and activities. We do not provide legal or health and safety advice.
Can I track subcontractors?
Yes. Workers can be recorded as employees, subcontractors, agency workers or other worker types, and you can filter the matrix by type.
