What Is a Health and Safety Training Matrix?

The shape is the same as any training matrix: people in rows, requirements in columns, dates in cells. The content leans toward induction, role risk training, first aid cover, working at height, face-fit and similar items you decide apply — examples only, not a mandatory list.

How it differs from a general training matrix

In practice the labels overlap. Many contractors keep one matrix that includes site access cards, plant tickets and H&S courses together, because mobilisation asks all of those questions at once. Calling it a “health and safety training matrix” usually means the columns are chosen from risk assessments and H&S priorities rather than from HR development plans.

Typical columns (examples only)

• Company / site induction acknowledgement
• Role-specific H&S briefings tied to your risk assessments
• First aid / fire marshal where you plan cover
• Working at height, asbestos awareness, confined spaces — only if assigned
• Cards such as CSCS, IPAF or PASMA where sites require them

None of those is universally required for every worker on every site. Your competent person, contracts and risk assessments decide what you assign.
