Quick answer
An asbestos training matrix records who holds which assigned asbestos training pathway — awareness, non-licensed work, and any further grades your organisation uses — with expiry or refresher dates and evidence. Download this free Excel template and keep pathways in separate columns. FieldClear can import it later; it does not decide which Control of Asbestos Regulations duties apply to your work.
What’s in the template
A workers-against-requirements Excel matrix with automatic colour from today’s date, framed so asbestos awareness is never confused with non-licensed or licensed removal training.
- Worker rows with role and worker type.
- Conditional formatting for expired, expiring and current dates.
- Blank vs N/A so pathways not required are not mistaken for missing.
- Evidence location for certificates and face-fit records.
- A role requirements sheet you edit for survey, trade and removal grades.
Why split asbestos pathways
A single “asbestos” column looks tidy and fails the allocation question: who holds awareness only versus non-licensed work training for tomorrow’s strip-out? If pathways differ, give each its own column with its own date.
| Example column | Typical use | Watch-out |
|---|---|---|
| Asbestos awareness | Trades who may disturb ACMs incidentally | Not a substitute for non-licensed training |
| Non-licensed work (NNLW) | If your organisation assigns it | Scope and refreshers matter as much as the date |
| Face fit / RPE | If respirators are used | Keep separate from the training pathway |
| Medical / clearance (if assigned) | Role and duty dependent | Do not store medical detail beyond what you need |
| CSCS / site access | If sites require a card | Customer dependent |
How to use it
- Add workers who may encounter asbestos on your contracts — including subcontractors.
- Split awareness, non-licensed and any further pathways into separate columns.
- Enter expiry or refresher dates as DD/MM/YYYY.
- Use N/A when a pathway does not apply; leave blank only when missing.
- Review before mobilising strip-out or refurbishment gangs.
- When colouring cells becomes the job, upload for automatic status and reminders.
Disclaimer
Awareness, non-licensed and related columns are examples only. Licensed asbestos work has additional duties and competence expectations this template does not cover. This is not legal or HSE advice. A green cell is not authorisation to work with asbestos.
Questions people ask before signing up
Is the training matrix template really free?
Yes. Download the Excel file and use it however you like, including commercially. There is no obligation to try the software.
What is a training matrix?
A training matrix is a grid of workers against the training, qualifications and cards their roles require. Each cell shows whether that person holds that requirement and when it expires. It is the quickest way to see where the gaps are across a workforce.
Can I import my existing Excel training matrix?
Yes. Upload an Excel or CSV file, map the columns to workers, roles, qualifications and expiry dates, then preview the result. Nothing is created until you confirm the import.
Does the software tell me which qualifications are legally required?
No. The system helps you track the requirements your organisation assigns. You remain responsible for determining what applies to your workers and activities. We do not provide legal or health and safety advice.
Can I track subcontractors?
Yes. Workers can be recorded as employees, subcontractors, agency workers or other worker types, and you can filter the matrix by type.
Can I store certificates?
Yes. Attach supporting evidence such as PDFs and images to worker records, so the certificate sits alongside the expiry date rather than in a separate folder.
Outgrown your spreadsheet?
Upload the same file and turn it into a live matrix with automatic expiry reminders.
