How to Build a Training Matrix for Demolition Contractors

Build demolition records around the actual phase of work, CCDO grade, plant category and task controls rather than a generic list applied to every operative.

Let the phase of work shape the view

Soft strip, structural demolition, crushing, cutting and asbestos-related activity produce different allocation questions. Record CCDO grade exactly and preserve CPCS or NPORS category detail. Awareness, non-licensed asbestos work, face fitting and RPE instruction should not be collapsed into one hazardous-material field.

Fields demolition teams commonly need

  • Worker, employer and demolition role
  • CCDO card grade and expiry
  • Plant scheme, category and endorsements
  • CAT and Genny or service-location record where assigned
  • Asbestos course scope, kept explicit
  • Face-fit result and mask model where managed
  • Project briefings and evidence links

Use the matrix in pre-start planning

Select a provisional crew for each work phase and check records against the method, plant and controls chosen by competent people. Surface blanks before induction. Repeat the check if the sequence changes, a subcontract gang is substituted or a certificate will expire before completion.

  1. Clean worker and role names.
  2. Verify card grades from evidence.
  3. Separate plant categories and hazardous-work records.
  4. Assign only requirements approved for the role and task.
  5. Review each phase before work starts.
  6. Keep authorisation and competence decisions outside the date cell.

Handle temporary and specialist labour

Demolition projects often bring in short-duration plant operators, burners or agency labour. Decide before mobilisation which named people must appear in your matrix, which evidence the subcontract employer supplies and how substitutions are controlled. Give every incoming record a verification state; “file received” is not the same as checked. Brief supervisors to report a changed operative before the shift starts. When specialist work finishes, demobilise the person from active views without destroying records that your retention policy requires. This keeps expiry dashboards focused on the live workforce while preserving the evidence linked to the phase in which the person worked.

Link each phase review to the current named crew, because a demolition plan can remain unchanged while labour and plant operators rotate. If an operative’s role broadens from soft strip to machine operation or torch cutting, assign and verify the new records before changing availability. Keep task briefings dated and project-specific. They may demonstrate communication of the plan, but should not be used to overwrite portable card or course information.

Important scope limit

FieldClear cannot decide whether demolition or asbestos work is licensed, select controls, assess competence or approve a demolition plan. It tracks assigned requirements only. Refer to current HSE guidance and competent advisers; this guide is not legal advice.
