How to Track Lifting Appointments and Training Records
Record courses and cards by exact lifting role, but retain project appointments, lift plans, briefings and authorisations as separate controlled evidence.
A course is not an appointment
CPCS or NPORS evidence for Appointed Person, Crane Supervisor or Slinger/Signaller may support role selection, but the responsible organisation still assesses competence and makes appointments under its arrangements. Keep exact card categories and expiry in the workforce matrix; keep written appointment and lift-specific authority in the project file.
Separate the evidence layers
- Worker and employing organisation
- Exact lifting role and card scheme
- Category, endorsements and expiry
- Relevant experience or competence-review reference
- Internal authorisation status
- Project appointment document
- Lift-plan briefing acknowledgement
- Change and handover record
Review the team, not isolated cards
Check that each planned function has suitable cover for every shift and phase, including leave and changes. Match the operator and slinger evidence to equipment and operations identified by competent planners. If a nominated person changes, revisit appointments and briefings instead of copying a matrix row into the old plan.
- Define roles in the lifting procedure.
- Verify exact cards and categories.
- Assess and authorise through the employer process.
- Issue project appointments.
- Brief the lift plan and retain acknowledgement.
- Re-check after team, equipment or plan changes.
Plan continuity for lifting roles
Complex or extended works can depend on one Appointed Person or Crane Supervisor. Review availability, expiry and deputy arrangements before the programme fixes lifting dates. A deputy still needs proper assessment, appointment and briefing; copying a requirement set does not transfer authority. Where several employers contribute people to an operation, state which organisation owns each appointment and how changes are communicated. Retain superseded appointments and lift-plan revisions with clear status so site teams do not use an old issue. After completion, record any competence or briefing action without altering historical card dates.
Make category wording visible in the planner’s view, especially where endorsements or crane types affect selection. If a worker presents a card from a different scheme, refer equivalence or acceptance to the competent company process rather than forcing it into the expected label. Track medical or fitness status only where legitimately required and with appropriate access controls. A rejected or restricted appointment decision belongs in the controlled competence record, not an unguarded note on a general export.
Training status is not lift approval
FieldClear does not plan lifts, appoint personnel, inspect equipment or determine competence. It tracks requirements assigned by your organisation. Use competent lifting advice and current regulation and standards; this guide is not legal or engineering advice.
