How to Track Banksman and Slinger Competence Records
Separate vehicle-marshalling records from slinger/signaller evidence, preserve scheme and category detail, and keep task authorisation outside the certificate field.
Similar language, different work
“Banksman” may refer to vehicle marshalling in one team and lifting communication in another. Name the requirement by activity. For slinger/signallers, record the exact CPCS, NPORS or other evidence your organisation accepts, including categories or endorsements. For vehicle movements, retain the training and site rules relevant to that traffic plan.
Record enough to allocate safely
- Worker, employer and normal role
- Exact activity: vehicle marshal or slinger/signaller
- Card scheme, category and expiry
- Crane or lifting-operation scope where recorded
- Site traffic-management briefing
- Communication method or project induction
- Evidence file and internal authorisation reference
Check the whole operation
A current card is only one input. The lifting plan, appointed roles, supervision, equipment and site conditions must be dealt with by the responsible people. Use the matrix to find candidate workers and upcoming expiries, then complete the project’s formal selection and briefing process.
- Remove ambiguous “banksman” labels.
- Verify cards and categories.
- Assign records by actual activity.
- Review team and shift coverage.
- Keep appointment and authorisation documents linked but distinct.
- Update after renewal or role change.
Use consistent language in briefings
Traffic plans and lift plans should name the activity and signals expected, and the matrix labels should use the same distinctions. If site teams casually call every reversing assistant a slinger or every slinger a banksman, records will be selected against the wrong task. Include agency and subcontract workers in pre-start checks and verify the person who actually arrives, not only the name originally proposed. Observe performance through the competent supervisory process and record any suspension of company authorisation separately; an unexpired external card should not override a justified internal restriction.
For multi-crane or congested sites, record project briefings against the date and location rather than treating them as transferable training. Radios, hand signals, visibility and language arrangements must follow the plan. If the designated person is replaced mid-shift, repeat the required briefing and update local controls. The matrix can identify candidates with assigned records, while the supervisor documents who took the role for that operation and how coordination was maintained.
Competence is not a date field
FieldClear tracks assigned requirements and evidence. It does not create lift plans, appoint lifting personnel, assess practical competence or authorise vehicle movements. Use competent lifting and traffic-management advice. This is not legal advice.
