Quick answer
A renewables training matrix tracks who holds which assigned solar PV, heat pump, electrical site-card and access qualifications — with expiry dates coloured from today. Download this free Excel template, rename columns to your installer grades, and attach evidence paths. FieldClear can import the sheet later. It does not decide MCS, Building Regulations or client requirements for you.
What’s in the template
An Excel matrix for solar PV and related renewables crews who mix roof work, electrical isolation and manufacturer product training across small gangs.
- Worker rows with role and worker type.
- Conditional formatting for expired, expiring and current dates.
- Blank vs N/A distinction.
- Evidence location for certificates and card photos.
- A role requirements sheet for installer, electrician and supervisor grades.
Example columns to rename for renewables
| Example column | Typical use | Watch-out |
|---|---|---|
| Solar PV installation course | Product / pathway training you assign | Manufacturer courses are not interchangeable |
| ECS / electrical site card | If electrotechnical workers need one | Keep separate from PV product training |
| Working at height / harness | Roof and scaffold access | Rescue training may be a separate column |
| IPAF / access equipment | If you allocate MEWPs | Category matters |
| First aid | If assigned to the gang | Role and site dependent |
How to use it for installers
- Add installers, electricians and supervisors — including subcontractors.
- Keep PV product training, electrical cards and access tickets as separate columns.
- Enter expiry dates as DD/MM/YYYY.
- Use N/A when a column does not apply; leave blank only when missing.
- Review before roof mobilisations and new framework call-offs.
- When the sheet drifts, run the matrix health check or upload for reminders.

Solar PV, electrical card and access columns are examples only. Requirements vary by system, client and Building Regulations pathway. This is not legal or scheme advice. A green cell is not authorisation to install or energise plant.
Questions people ask before signing up
Is the training matrix template really free?
Yes. Download the Excel file and use it however you like, including commercially. There is no obligation to try the software.
What is a training matrix?
A training matrix is a grid of workers against the training, qualifications and cards their roles require. Each cell shows whether that person holds that requirement and when it expires. It is the quickest way to see where the gaps are across a workforce.
Can I import my existing Excel training matrix?
Yes. Upload an Excel or CSV file, map the columns to workers, roles, qualifications and expiry dates, then preview the result. Nothing is created until you confirm the import.
Does the software tell me which qualifications are legally required?
No. The system helps you track the requirements your organisation assigns. You remain responsible for determining what applies to your workers and activities. We do not provide legal or health and safety advice.
Can I track subcontractors?
Yes. Workers can be recorded as employees, subcontractors, agency workers or other worker types, and you can filter the matrix by type.
Can I store certificates?
Yes. Attach supporting evidence such as PDFs and images to worker records, so the certificate sits alongside the expiry date rather than in a separate folder.
Outgrown your spreadsheet?
Upload the same file and turn it into a live matrix with automatic expiry reminders.
